Project Lay Summary

This project will be part of work package 1 (prevention). This project will explore the potential relationship between commonly used medications such as antibiotics and aspirin and the risk of oesophageal cancer. We will examine how these medications, when used over time, might influence the risk of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer. By using large healthcare datasets, we aim to identify potential patterns in medication use and oesophageal cancer risk.

Scientific Overview

Does long-term use of commonly prescribed medications, increase the risk of developing oesophageal cancer or the progression of Barrett’s oesophagus to Oesophageal adenocarcinoma in the general population?

Oesophageal cancer remains to be a major global health challenge which highlights the need for effective prevention strategies and expanding the treatment options. Emerging research indicates that commonly used medications, including antibiotics, aspirin and statins, may influence the risk of developing oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC), particularly with prolonged use. However, research gaps remain in understanding what drives progression from premalignant conditions such as Barrett’s oesophagus, to high-grade dysplasia or OAC.

For this PhD, we will investigate these associations using large healthcare datasets, including GP records, prescribing records, and linked cancer registry data. By identifying potential patterns in medication use and OAC risk, this study aims to provide insights that could improve prescribing practices and preventive strategies, especially for high-risk patients.

Short-term impacts: Identification of novel risk factors for BO/OAC. Production of student dissertations and scientific journal publications.

Long-term impacts: Potential for novel interventions to aide primary prevention of BO/OAC. Hypothesis generation that would inform and lead to further research grant applications.
